Start Using OpenQuake

Openquake is available to interested stakeholders through two options. The first option is our OpenQuake Alpha Testing Service (OATS). This internet (cloud) based solution is accessed through a SSH/ SFTP client and does not require any other locally installed software; the application is updated automatically. The second option is a local installation of OpenQuake on a users’ computer.  This option requires some technical knowledge and we therefore recommend you to use OATS first.

OpenQuake Alpha Testing Service (OATS)

The GEM-MF (Global Earthquake Model – Model Facility) has developed the OpenQuake Alpha Testing Service to provide members of the GEM Community the opportunity access the latest Alpha release of the OpenQuake application on a cloud-based server. OATS allows GEM collaborators and other stakeholders to try OpenQuake and learn about its (current) features, which will in turn lead to useful insights for the development-team.

Requirements
Using OATS requires familiarity of using a command-line interface, as there is no graphical user-interface. The image on the left shows an example of use of the command-line interface. Some experience with running commands related to executing calculations is also needed.

Demonstration-files and output
There are a number of demo-files incorporated into the OATS-setup that you can use to run calculations and hence experience the OpenQuake software. Outputs such hazard maps, hazard curves, loss curves, spatial distribution of building economic value, etc. can be obtained with it. One needs to visualize them in an external programme.
OATS will hence provide you with:

  • Pre-installed and configured OpenQuake, allowing you to immediately begin exploring the capabilities of OpenQuake
  • Maintained and updated in parallel with our development cycles, so you will always have the latest version of OpenQuake.

In order to gain access to OATS, one should agree with the Terms and Conditions of use and submit a request-form. Go to the OATS page now to request an account.

Install OpenQuake locally

If you would need a local installation of OpenQuake, in order to work with the application, please contact us, and we will advise you on how this can be done. Write us at info@openquake.org and put in the subject-line ‘Local Install’
